Your task is to explain what happened in a business and how its records support that explanation. A total can show that sales increased or cash decreased. Understanding the people, activities, and documents behind the total helps you explain the change and decide what to investigate next.

Charles River Home Furnishings, Inc. is a home-furnishings business in Greater Boston. It buys merchandise, manufactures selected products, and provides hourly design services. Follow a customer furnishing project and the people who connect those activities, then examine the documents their work produces.

Begin with the Company

The first reading needs no download, installation, SQL, or prior knowledge of process diagrams. Basic financial accounting is enough to begin. The chapters introduce business terms before database identifiers, and the diagrams have reading guidance.

Follow this sequence:

  1. Meet the company. Understand its customers, offering, and recurring staff roles.
  2. See how the work connects. Learn how departments pass work and information between them.
  3. Follow the customer. Read Order-to-Cash and Design Services to distinguish delivery, billing, and settlement.
  4. Look behind fulfillment. Follow purchasing and manufacturing into inventory and production.
  5. Bring people and accounting together. Read Payroll, then Journals and Close.
  6. Investigate actual records. Move into Learn and Practice when you are ready to use the data.

This is a reading sequence. In the company, purchasing, production, customer service, payroll, and finance overlap rather than waiting for each chapter's activities to finish.

Read, Explain, Then Investigate

Each process chapter gives you an ordinary business situation, the accounting consequences, and a small map of supporting records. Short concept checks let you explain the distinctions in your own words. Expand the optional sections when you need detailed fields, specialized diagrams, or an investigation.

As you investigate, you will encounter intentional anomalies and control exceptions. Treat a flagged row as a starting question: check its source, timing, and related evidence before deciding what it means and what follow-up is needed.

Keep the Resources Nearby

Why This Dataset explains the value of connected records. Downloads provides the teaching files, while the Dataset Guide explains how to read their tables. These supporting pages remain available throughout your work.

Charles River belongs to Accounting Analytics Hub. The Accounting Analytics textbook develops the analytical methods behind later investigations. The Hub's AIS and tool courses are planned resources rather than prerequisites for this reading.

Teaching a class? The Instructor Adoption Guide connects the material to course preparation and assignments.
